Happy New Year

2010 is gone and we've welcomed in 2011 with a prayer for just a little less rain. Don't get me wrong, I love the rain but over Christmas the knowledge that I may not be able to see my loved ones because of a "little" flooding came as a shock. Especially when I drove down the roads that had only been recently opened and saw how high the water had been.

On a brighter note, The Story Tree is open again after our Christmas break and it has been lovely to see all of our regular customers again, and a few new faces too! Our Wednesday mornings which were taken up by storytelling before the holidays - and which will commence again when school starts back - have been no less busy than usual as all the mums have become accustomed to their weekly coffee fix and gossip catchup with Susie's amazing treats. It has become a bit of a "mum's and bub's" day, so feel free to join in.

As we usher back in the new school year we would like to let you all know that we are offering 20% off the Bobble Art lunch boxes and backpacks, for new school arrivals or replacing that item that just isn't going to last another year :)

I'll leave it there today with the hope that the booming outside is someone moving ridiculously large furniture next door and not more thunder...

This Time of Year

Long time no hear, Rachel here. So I blog in spits and spats. Actually, I do most of life in much the same way I've come to realise. There are times of motivation and energy, and there are times of tiredness and retreat. Lately, I've been feeling quiet. I have been so grateful to have Matt and Shannyn hold the fort at The Story Tree. I had a miscarriage a few weeks ago and have been feeling like a turtle in it's shell, retreating into home, quiet, alone and healing. I am so grateful that my life has so much in it that fills it with joy. I have been sad and happy at the same time. I have grieved the loss of what could have been, while rejoicing in all that already is. Both are true-joy and sadness, light and dark. I have needed to trust the process of healing, trust the quiet emptiness inside, and the noise of day to day that is the what life is with our two precious boys.

This blog site really is a mix of the shop and of my personal life. It's the way life is. The two are inseparable. The Story Tree is a part of me and I am also more than my work; and The Story Tree is more than me, it is everyone who comes in and makes it a part of their life. I wouldn't have it any other way. It is a blessing to me and I love that it is a blessing for others.

This time of year I like to reflect. I realise, as I look back on all that's happened just how much I have to be grateful for. It is the love of family and friends that sustains me.

We've got some amazingly talented women in Boonah. First Pollen, then Hippy Wild Child, and now we'd like to introduce 'Red Pear', the beautiful work of local super woman/mum, Amanda Willman.

Amanda uses vintage and hand screen-printed fabrics by MelBomba, Sydney, to make her handbags.

Cozy Corners

It's amazing how many people have been coming into The Story Tree lately and were so surprised and amazed at our ultra cozy back area, so we've decided to take a few snaps for those of you who haven't had the pleasure.

From an emplyees perspective the 'back' of the shop is by far my favourite place. The customers out there are always smiling, and the children are almost always happy to fend for themselves in our childrens area - which i'm sure is the reason for the majority of the smiles from our mums!

Some of our customers remember and were frequently visiting the shop while the back was being created. It's amazing looking at the before and after pictures and even more so looking at where it has come since being opened up.

We run storytelling out there every Wednesday morning and have a bookclub once a month. At the moment there's an Aromatherapy workshop running every Thursday and we've also had a few children's birthday parties!

From Sunday Chutney to Huckleberry Finn

The Story Tree has had lots of new children's books arrive the the past few days. One of my favourites, Sunday Chutney, written from the perspective of a young girl whose family travels often and has to make new friends everytime they do so, was a joy to read once again.

Another of Aaron Blabey's books, Stanley Paste takes a look at a young boy who believes he is too short and the friend he makes who believes she is too tall, and who both come to realise that it doesn't really matter.

The Adventures Huckleberry Finn is a much beloved classic that has also arrived.

At the moment we've also got some amazing pop-up books, even one with music - because pop-up pictures alone are just not entertaining enough these days!

Something Special

It's so nice working somewhere that really promotes hand-made, fair trade, and organic goodies. I always know the clothes have been made with care, and the delicious home made surprises from Susie Bell have been baked with lots - and lots - of love.

This is Susie's Chocolate Coffee and Zucchini cake

Another favourite at the moment is Cobs Organic Popcorn - lightly salted, slightly sweet. It has an unusual taste, not unlike caramel popcorn, but without the overwhelming sweetness after only two bites.

If this confused weather continues to sit over Boonah and you find yourself wanting to get out of the house, come in for our amazing fair trade organic coffee, you never know, there might even be some cake left!

The Tree In Boonah

So last Saturday night, we had the honour of seeing The Tree at the Cultural Centre in Boonah.

It was so breathtakingly beautiful to see familiar local scenery and landmarks of The Scenic Rim on the big screen. The cast and crew, including leading actors Charlotte Gainsbourg, Morgana Davies and Marton Csokas were our customers during filming last year. Whoever would have thought little ol' Boonah would have more than it's fifteen minutes of fame... Josiah was an extra in the funeral scene, so we tried to keep an eye out, I didn't catch it, but Shannyn swears she saw his red hair in the background!

Here we are, Shannyn, Matt and I.Umm....Please excuse Matt, he doesn't quite know how to behave at a red carpet event.

Shannyn chatted for ages with the gorgeous 8 year old Morgana Davies, who shined in the film as Simone.

Thanks to Sue Taylor, Australian Producer,we have a limited number of copies of The Tree Screenplay.

A Quiet Night In

He has enough originals now for an EP. Plus some pub songs. It could be fun, I reckon.

The Loveliness That Is Life

I must confess straight up my gratitude for ye olde iphone. 99.9% of our life is captured on its camera, and I'm yet to download any fancy apps...I know, I can't believe it either. Shannyn has more than once showed me all the great things I could do, if I actually utilized the potential....

But, that's really beside my point here. I wanted to pay tribute to days gone by. So many joyous moments, so much beauty everyday, if I'm paying attention....here are a few I noticed and captured....

Loveliness is picking flowers from the garden and putting them in jars around the house. Extra lovely is when the boys join me...Here is Oskar creating an original arrangement (and I am absolutely NOT allowed to rearrange).

Loveliness is a beach holiday in Agnes Water in winter....the kids do not let the chilly breeze at dusk stop them from getting wet with their new friend.

Loveliness is Op shopping. Collecting preloved tablecloths is becoming at bit of an addiction...I will dedicate a whole blog to all the joy the treasures bring...crockery,lamps,dresses etc.,etc.

Loveliness is art and craft. Mess allowing is mandatory, as paint is by no means restricted to paper...just come check out our front porch, and the furniture on it...Oh and the gate, and the railings...

Obviously sunsets are loveliness. However, this one would not have been noticed if I hadn't come outside and stopped fussing around the house.

Watching Tobey and Oskar play with their friends is sheer loveliness.

So I have documented the loveliness here. Do not worry, there's plenty of horrid,stressful,crazy moments in life, by no means misunderstand...I don't tend to take photos of them, they pass and the Loveliness remains....

What an Unusual Day

Boonah is very quiet today. It's also been raining since this morning so everything is very dull and wet looking outside.

So if you're at home enjoying the weather, maybe curled up with a favourite book, we've got plenty more in here waiting for you when you're ready for a new read :)

This months Book Club book is The Woman Who Thought Too Much by Joanne Limburg

The Woman Who Thought Too Much is a memoir in which the author tries to understand and manage her Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Limburg takes the reader through the various tests and experiments and internet research she has done, while trying to come to terms with her illness.

The Winter of Our Disconnect by Susan Maushart is one that grabbed my attention when it arrived.

As someone who grew up in this techno age and loves it, I have often wondered what we used to do without it. In this book a mother (Maushart) and her three teenage techo-addict daughters give up technology for 6 months and talk about how it changed their perspective of technology and of themselves along the way.

Since we've opened our doors again, there have been lots of new books coming in to fill up our shelves. Our second hand range is also expanding for those of you keen for our book-swap.

Here's hoping for a sunny Spring day tomorrow :)

It's Been Too Long

It really has been too long since I, Rachel posted. You know the longer it's been since catching up with an old friend, the harder it seems to be...hmm what to talk about. The trouble is, throughout any given day, little or big ideas float through my mind and I will write an imaginary blog, and then it's as though I've already done it, it's old news, or not really even news worthy.

For example, many months ago I had numerous conversations with a wide range of people about odd socks. I thought, oh I should write a blog about this. But then I had discussed it that many times, that I got over it. However, I will tell you the gist, cos it's a good one: Odd socks are a good thing. They are an important reminder that some things just aren't that big of a deal.

I came to this conclusion after many a morning trying to find Tobey and Oskar a proper pair of socks each. As our clean washing tends to live in various piles around the place (dirty washing lives in various piles on the laundry floor, oh and bathroom floor), this task was rather time consuming. Not only that, the boys would at times argue over the same pair, and me, trying to be fair and minimise escalating emotions, would split the pairs so that they had one of each-cos that's fair,right? So, odd socks won the day. But that's just a side note, the real epiphany for me was the WHY? Why does it matter if the kids are wearing odd socks? Just cos that's not what you do. It's a just cos that's the way it is, that's what people do thing. THIS IS NOT A GOOD ENOUGH REASON. It does not harm anyone, it is not disrespectful. Those are important reasons to do things. If Tobey or Oskar specifically wanted a proper pair of socks, if it mattered to them, well then I would respect that. But they don't give two hoots. So, my conclusion folks is this: Odd socks are a reminder to say no to pointless rules of 'just cos that's how it is'. Be free to make your own decisions. Heck, break a few 'just cos that's how it's always been' rules! It's liberating, trust me!

So, after that super deep revelation that I am glad to have shared again and again, let me fill you in. I feel like we have been running The Story Tree at about 80%. I have chosen to be okay with this because my family and my health and wellbeing, and my need for connection are important,they require time. I do not want to be a workaholic, it is not sustainable. When I am too busy,the people I love most get the dregs of me at the end of the day. I put my energy, my best self out there to strangers, and dear Matt and the kids pay the price. When I say 80%, I mean that not everything gets done when it should, to the standard that I would like.

The good news is, change is in the air. Matt has retired from running his own concreting business and is now in partnership with me. YAYNESS. Seriously, this is huge. Double energy into one business, double energy into raising the boys, double energy into our LIFE-FULLSTOP. Do you know what makes me sad? That stress has been the everpresent vibe around here for so long, we forgot what it's like to live without it. Malaise of our society's culture, the norm-just how it is,hey? No sirree, not around here no more. The culture at our place is one of odd socks.

And falling asleep with a good book is also something we encourage

A few more 'norms' around here:

Sundays in pyjamas until we need to leave the house to go have a picnic, or walk up the street to visit neighbours;

Playing in the sandpit for as many hours as desired(read:kids in sandpit, parents pottering);

Picking daisies and lavender to put in little jars around the house;

Having a bubblebath at whatever time of day you feel like it;

Matt singing and playing the guitar during kids bathtime;

Vacuuming the loungeroom carpet three times a day cos I let them eat toast, fruit etc, while playing lego or watching ABC Kids, and the crumbs attract wildlife cos we live in the sticks;

last but not least, siestas are a personal fave:)

The 80% life makes sense to me, leave 20% time for pleasure, fun, relaxation and creativity

Just a blog to let everyone know that from the above dates, we at the Story Tree are closing our doors for some much deserved rest, relaxation, and family time (and probably a bit of a spring clean!)

We will also be closed Monday 9th August for the show holiday, but will be open Tuesday and Wednesday so come in for your Story Tree fix before the 12th!

I'm not a huge fan of winter. The cold weather does not make me feel like sitting in front of a cozy fire in my PJs all day. It makes me want to hibernate and hide away until I can walk outside without a jumper on again. As if dealing with the cold wasn't enough, the wind has come rushing through little Boonah the last few days to top of the complete "winter" feeling.
Thankfully, with the door of the Story Tree closed and the heater on, I can quite successfully pretend that it isn't winter outside. Top it off with hot chocolate and homemade treats, and there really is no other place I'd rather be on a day like today.

If you've been past the shop lately you'll have noticed the childrens' clothes on sale. They are all reduced from their original prices and that's all we have left folks, so get in quick for a bargain!

As the latest edition to The Story Tree, I would just like to introduce my self...
Im 15 and go to Boonah High. My best subject would be Drama. In my spare time I play guitar, bass, and learning piano. I also enjoy music, movies, chilling out with friends, and working at The Story Tree (extra merit points?).

When I leave school I'd like to study creative arts. But for now Im happy hanging out at The Story Tree every Saturday.

So here I am waiting waiting waiting... I've been having a bad run with stuff falling you see.

It all started yesterday afternoon when I was getting ready to close the shop. As Susie had just made a beautiful Toblerone Cheesecake, I wanted to make sure presentation was at its best. I carefully put the cake on the counter and turned to wash the cake display plate, when right next to me I see the cake fall, UPSIDE DOWN... SPLAT. And that was it... It happened too quickly for me to react, It's like I just had to watch it happen!

So after trying to clean something that perhaps didn't necessarily need to be cleaned, resulted in extra cleaning time I have kind of, a little bit, come to the conclussion "Next time just carry on with life and don't worry about the smudges".

THEN TODAY "carrying on with life", was making a cappuccino and as I went to sprinkle the chocolate on top, the hole flippin lid fell in the coffee and mountains of chocolate! It was like one part of me was completly devastated, like why now? Why am I now one of those clumsey people that this sort of stuff happens to all the time?? ... And the other part were saying sarcasticly "would you like some coffee with that?". So now I'm kind of playing the waiting game, what's going to happen next I wonder?? So while I'm wondering I'm also unpacking new stock with the greatest of care, and thought that the readers of this blog may like to know we are now stocking "Made by White" products.

Beautiful, beautiful designs of necklaces, brooches, earings and boby pins. The products are very girlie. Bringing back memories of some of my own childhood.... I've included some pictures of the day for your viewing pleasure.

Winter is rolling in...

The days are getting much much cooler in the small town of Boonah. And so it is only appropriate that The Story Tree gets cozier. The coffee is getting hotter and the temperature is definitely being turned up. For me, winter is such a beautiful time of the year, with nearly everyone rugging up adding layers and layers to outfits, only to enter the heated indoors and have to unpeel layer after layer. (It really makes buying that extremely expensive and totally out of "my budget" Coat stand worth it).

This month we are looking forward to inviting all The Story Tree Friends to a night of enjoyment, offering special discounts and great cheese dishes partnered with wine, (or beer I guess if that's your thing). VIP night should be on the 24 June, All will be confirmed in the newsletter, which will most likely be hitting the streets this weekend. - If you would like to receive a copy of our monthly newsletter, let me know your email or address and I'll be sure to have you a copy!

This week has also been the last week of Miss Madeline Blaik working here at The Story Tree, she will be very muchly missed, and we can only wish her the best for everything! Madeline has many great talents and individual qualities that The Story Tree was so happy to embrace.
Along with her duties of "Work place Health and Safety Officer", Story Teller and Great Maker of Things, Maddie was also one of the key people that kicked off Brown Owls.

In memory of Maddie fantastic contributions Rachel has made the executive decision that we will be keeping Bernice the chicken and Edward the Moo-Cow in store permanently. Sorry guys these adorable little companions are not for sale, not on our watch... not now, not ever.

So Maddie good luck with the future, we are looking forward to hearing great great things, and looking forward to seeing you still around the small streets of the Boon and Brown Owls.

Ok so I am still unsure what to get my Mum for Mothers Day this year. I know it doesn't REALLY matter what I decide in the end, because I know she will love (or pretend to) what ever I get her. It's just that this year I have a clearer understanding of what Mothers Day is actually all about. It's about being grateful, I always knew that but now that I'm older I really understand what my Mum gave up to be my Mum... I mean how can you possibly find a gift that says "thanks so much Mum for giving up some of the best years of you life, thanks for sacraficing your next to perfect body figure for me, thanks for listening to me nag and nag, thanks for letting me think I knew all the answers in the world and thanks for not ripping that peircing out ..."

There are many of us that will always ask Mother dear what she would like this year, and still get the same response as the last ten thousand years "oh I'll be happy with what ever you get for me"... Yea ok, so what should I get you then??? Will you be happy if I pick that one thong someone left at the beach, wrap it up and put it in a box for you?? Will that make you happy? What if I just get that "Number One Mum" mug I got you when I was like 10 and re-wrap it?? Surely that will not make your day and perhaps even make you regret a few things...

Actually reviewing the situation, I think The Story Tree will be the best bet. With all the cook books, new novels in store and pretty pretty things...

As I type this blog the majority of noise is coming from our children's area where Maddie - marvelous Maddie to some - is running our story telling, which is growing more and more popular each week.

This is my - Shannyn - first day working in the shop on Wednesdays since Maddie began storytelling. I've only just finished making tea and coffee for mums and babycinos galore for the littlies, and thought I'd better grab some photos before they are finished for the day.

They've just started singing too :)

Holistic Self Care Workshop

Next month The Story Tree will be hosting a 5 week series of workshops focusing on "Holistic Self Care for Women". The workshop will be facilitated by Honni Hayton, a registered counselor with a community based private practice.

Each week the series will discuss a different area of care: Social, Psychological, Emotional, Physical and Spiritual and are designed to be interactive, practical and fun.

"I believe it's important for women of all ages to take time out of their busy schedules to take care of themselves and others. We're looking forward to these evenings being a relaxed time of sharing and caring" - Honni Hayton.

WHEN: Wednesday evenings from 12th May to 9th June 2010
TIME: 6.45 - 9.00pm
COST: $100.00 for the 5 weeks, includes materials and light supper.

With our new back section open comes our new children's area! Many of you have already seen it by coming along to Storytelling on Wednesdays at 10am, or by coming to Brown Owls on Thursday afternoons, or just by browsing through the shop.
Our children's area is packed with toys, colouring in activities and puzzels, so there is always plenty for the littlies to do while mum and dad have a look around or sit down to enjoy our freshly ground fairtrade organic coffee!

Happenings of The Story Tree

The back of The Story Tree is looking amazing! If you haven't been in for a peek yet why not pop over for our new Book Club? Or our Brown Owls group?
And if you have children we also do storytelling every Wednesday at 10am!

Book Club will be held on the first Tuesday of every month starting in May and will be at 9:30am and/or 7:30pm so if you can't make the morning session feel free to come over after dinner :)

Brown Owls was started in Melbourne as a small BYO craft group and has grown to inspire people all over Australia to start their own Brown Owls groups.
So whether it's a project you've always meant to finish or you're wanting to try something new, come along for a relaxing evening of craft! - feel free to bring your sewing machine!

International Women's Day 2010 will be Celebrated in Boonah

Many of us young women take our working conditions and rights for granted these days. Having grown up in a generation where women have almost equal rights to men, we don't often think about what it would be like to live in a world where women worked long hours for half a man's wage and had no right to vote.

In the early 1900's, thousands of women marched through New York to petition for womens rights. From the actions of these women, International Women's Day came to be celebrated in many countries over the world as an official day for women to speak out our rights, the changes we would like to see in the world and how we can try to effect these changes.

So on Monday 8th March head over to the Fassifern Community Centre on Little High Street for stalls, arts and craft, free workshops, and health and lifestyle discussions. It starts at 9:30 and continues until 2:30pm. Feel free to bring your littlies!

There will be a range of FREE workshops on yoga, holistic well being, belly dancing, and heaps more.

The Story Tree will have a stall, so please pop in and have a cup of tea with me.

B. Graham joins the party..

Two words. Bob. Graham.
Recently The Story Tree added to its children's collection many of his much loved picture books and lets just say, I (Laura) pretty much wanted to jump for joy. As a child it was tradition for my Dad to read me a story before I went to bed and generally, as tradition goes, I pestered Dad to read the same story..every night. (Awkward silence) Hey don't judge me, he was really great with the characters voices!

Anyhow this book was called the Ship of Hope by, you guessed it, none other than Mr Graham.
With his beautifully detailed illustrations and clever story lines, Bob Graham became a hit with not only me but my Dad.

While our collection contains more of his newer releases such as Dimity Dumpty - The Story of Humpty's Little Sister, we also have some of the great classics like Greetings From Sandy Beach.

So should you be in the need for a great book that will entertain both you and the kids look no further than Australia's award winning author and illustrator, Bob Graham. He's the man.

Well g'day folks, thought I'd pop in and say hi, cos it's been awhile. I, Rachel have got such a great team at The Story Tree that I have put many tasks into their capable hands. Towards the end of 2009 i was quite unwell and had my gall bladder removed as a result. Between convalescing, the christmas madness and a beach holiday with the family, I have had a good mix of rest, activity and play.

As Valentine’s Day looms upon us once again, love is in the air… and for better or worse it has recently intoxicated the premises of The Story Tree.

Hello there dear friends! My name is Laura or as I am now currently referred to – “Schloz”. Without telling you my life story, I’m a born and bred member of the Boon and I graduated from high school last year. I’ve been working at the Story Tree now for… heck, let me think… well since we were at our first location at Coronation Drive anyhow.

As I mentioned before, the decorations are up, the books are out, The Story Tree is ready for lovers day but to be honest we’re not all that fussed. Now don’t get me wrong, I can be a sentimental schmuck if I put my mind to it, give me the Notebook to watch any day and I’ll need a box of Kleenex Aloe Vera Super Soft! However, the approach of the day of Valentine’s makes this sexy singleton a tad pessimistic. The thought is nice, the thought of reminding someone how much you care for them is something we all could use every now and then. However giant teddy bears with chocolates and balloons is pretty lame is it not? Eh? Eh….. Ok fine so truth be told, maybe I just wish I had someone to spoil me *sigh..

So to all you terribly attractive but slightly single people out there...

The Story Tree feels your pain, for one day of the year it down right sucks to be alone. But never fear! Head forth on Valentine’s weekend (13^th, 14^th) to the center of the universe and enjoy a symphony in your mouth with coffee, cake and free love advice!

I know it's a little late, but welcome to 2010!

I'm just popping in to give everyone a quick update on the shop.
We've been very busy over Christmas and the new year, expanding the shop and painting, painting, painting. One of us always seems to be covered in it.

Maddie is out back today, painting away for what may be the last time! It looks as though it's almost finished.

I'm getting some photos uploaded soon to do a Valentine's Day showcase for everyone. We've had some wonderfully quirky and sweet cards come in from Able and Game.

Speaking of photos I'll finish here with a photo that was taken of Rachel, closing shop for the night, The Story Tree truly looks magical at night :)

Goodmorning!

My name is Shannyn and I have been a Story Tree Slave for about 6 months now - since the shop moved and possibly became even more amazing!

If you're from little Boonah, you've probably seen me loitering around for years. I moved here when I was 10, went to High School here and worked in the local SPAR for 2 years before packing up and moving to Springfield to study. However, I didn't enjoy my subjects at Uni so I moved back into the area to take some time off.

Working at The Story Tree is amazing. We're unpacking all sorts of new goodies every week so the shop is always changing.

Perhaps my favourite shirt, the little tree hugger from the My Heart Beats Green range. We have tees for adults, children, and little bubs. There are lots of beautiful prints to choose from, and the babies tees are especially cute!

This little man couldn't wait to get his new Tshirt on!

Introducing Ann-Marie, first day @ The Story Tree

She worked really hard on colouring-in Angelina Ballerina, trying to beat Maddie's beautiful work. Bring in your littlies and they can help us pretty up the play area with pictures. We will send out a little something in the mail to enjoy on your next visit!

Here is Little Chipipi's 'Moveables' wall stickers. We have some rocket stickers up in the play area that my boys love to rearrange every visit. The great thing about these decals is that they really can be used re-used rearranged and un-arranged over and over without losing the stickability.

Here are some pages from my current favourite book that I recommend to lots of customers, 'It's Not Always Black and White - A Colourful Take on Life's Grey Areas' by Kate Knapp.

I chose this page because the kids and I have been unwell this week and have needed lots of rest. The trouble is when I to wait until I am really unwell to really let myself rest, instead of making it a normal part of life. I have been having gloriously long naps all week and feel all the better for it. I am listening to my body and it's needs for care instead of pushing myself to do do do, go go go. I have Shannyn, Maddie and Laura running the show at The Story Tree, so I needn't worry about how the shop will cope without my presence. I must say, I have missed being there and look forward to getting back to the coffee machine and the chats with customers. I am really grateful that it is a team effort, not just me that runs the show. Thankyou girls!

I like this page because it reminds me that we don't need to feel 'chirpy' all the time, it is okay to have quiet days and to honour our true inner state. Being authentic about feeling 'unchirpy', paradoxically allows the 'chirpy' to return from deep within instead of forcing it and acting it and grinning through.

Okay, I must confess that I have been pretty bad at enjoying life. I am pretty good at seeing what needs fixing, tidying, organising and sorting, and I expect myself to be on top of it. I want to be good at enjoying. I watch Tobey and Oskar play, completely engrossed in their game of mixing sand, dirt and water; meanwhile my mind is racing through all the things I need to get done and trying to work out when and how I can achieve it. I am also aware that I am not being present to the boys, so I feel crap about this too and end up not really playing and not really getting through the To Do's. So. STOP. Be here. Now we are having fun in the sand pit, tomorrow I am at work doing doing doing. Now is about enjoying, the kids, myself, the sun, the mess. This is a daily discipline, an hourly mindfulness.

I am at home doing book keeping, and needed to brighten things up. One of my favourite things to do is pick flowers from the garden and put them in whatever room it is that I will be working in. Anybody out there struggling?

I have had a few conversations lately, and I know I'm not the only one. The only one who feels overwhelmed by all the To Do Lists, the never ending pile of laundry, the day to day grind of have to do's.....

But it's not even about that stuff, really. It is an inner thing. I have a tendency to struggle with anxiety at times, a sense of urgency in my being that I know is not rational. It is as though my body feels there's an emergency happening, even though I can think it through and know that the world will not end if I don't do the dishes immediately. Then it gets worse if I look around and assume I'm the only one feeling this way, everybody else is cool calm and collected. I decide I am not coping, what is wrong with me? I ruminate, why can other people breeze through this thing called daily life and I feel on the verge of screaming and/or crying? Then I try pretending I feel cool calm and collected, you know, like everbody else but this gets draining and exhausting. The 'not coping' feeling is magnified significantly by keeping it my little secret. Well, Matt and the kids cop the snapping and low tolerance, so it's not really a secret. This is where a meltdown needs to happen. The tears flow and I confess my struggle, and boy is this therapeutic. My body can finally be free of the tension, it's out. Perspective comes as I share, a renewed sense of hope.

Stress, anxiety, fear, and any other debilitating feeling loses alot of its power just by letting others know about it. Reaching out helps us realise that it is a myth that no body else feels like this. Robin Worthington says that "the battle to keep up appearances unnecessarily,the mask-whatever name you give creeping perfectionism-robs us of our energies."

The paradox is, that by me telling you that I am stressed and anxious, I reduce my anxiety. By you telling me that you struggle at times too, I feel connected and know that I am not alone. We are all in this together.

In here you will find board books for 0-3year olds, such as Eric Carle's classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar , which is 40 years old this year. We also stock a range of Mem Fox, everybody knows Possum Magic! Where is the Green Sheep? is great for bed time reading with 1 year olds, as is her latest award-winning Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes. Graeme Base has a beautiful boardbook The Waterhole, a very simple adaptation of the original book for primary age students.

Our local Boonah Library has friday morning storytelling, for anyone wanting to take the littlies along to. We have plans for storytelling here at The Story Tree over the school holidays, so stay tuned for more info....

Here we are, about to embark on an adventure of turning something old into something new, Yay! Let the gutting begin...bye reddish-blackish faded old carpet, tiny back room, big counter in the middle of the room, floral curtain, fluoro lighting...

This was a place of farewelling loved ones. The Somerville Bros. Funeral Directors were the previous tentants here. I think that this is a good omen, as death means new life is the next part of the cycle. A place that was for grieving and tears, is the perfect place to bring joy and gladness. We can't have one without the other afterall.

Many years ago I was given this special book by a dear friend. I was going through a particularly dark time and struggling with ill health. The pages of this book had a profound affect on me and still do. Ever since, I keep an eye out for red trees, especially when I feel down and need a reminder to hope. Even in the darkest times if you search carefully, you will find a red leaf.

Whenever a customer comes in and needs a gift to uplift and encourage a friend, I recommend this book. I share my story of a dear friend giving it to me as a gift, and that it has changed the way I see my experiences.

Have you ever read a book, a poem or an article and found that it resonated with your experience? Did this have a healing affect, leading to a sense of not being as alone? This is the premise of bibliotherapy - that identifying with a theme or character in a story can be therapeutic, when it leads to meaningful discussion that promotes personal growth.

Any book can have this affect on a person, be it a novel, biography or a self help manual. At The Story Tree, I am in the process of building a range of books that intentionally focus on issues that people struggle with. Sometimes we don't have a language for our feelings, and books can help us put words to these. Any suggestions are welcome!

But the beauty of books is that they are also a source of entertainment, adventure, mystery, drama etc. Reading for pleasure is good for you. A book I read recently called The Bright Side of Disaster by Katherine Center had me laughing out loud. I identified with some of the main character's experience of motherhood, and it left me with a good feeling inside when I finished it.

Let me share an example of how stories I have read have influenced me as a person:

As a young girl, the story of Anne of Green Gables profoundly shaped my idea of what sort of woman I wanted to grow up to be. She was an orphan who rose above her circumstances, was passionate, romantic and strong in her sense of self. She was teased and tested and stayed true to herself, winning people over with her character. I am still inspired by her!

The beginnings of The Story Tree go back to a young shy girl with a love of reading. This girl has always had a need to create a cosy, peaceful and beautiful space in which to be, to dream of possibilities and to get swept away in stories.

I am still her, just older and a little more brave. I never lost the craving for this space after leaving childhood bedrooms behind, all of them havens from the outside world.

I decided to create a place of sanctuary to share with others who may also long for a moment of dreaming, of losing themself in the pages of a book. My hope is that customers are inspired, thoughts are provoked and gifts that are meaningful bring joy.

So, this little shopfront you see here is where a dream was realised for me, and it is about to grow. We are moving to a bigger shopfront so that more stock will fit, and coffee will be served. I am overwhelmed thinking about how a picture inside of me has become a literal location, a real physical space. And then I cannot even begin to wrap my mind around the new, bigger, more beautiful, more potential to grow shopfront has come to be so quickly. I am a little scared that it is too good to be true, do you ever get that feeling? Do I really deserve this? This life I have is too blessed...
